Configuring TypeScript

One thing that I really like about TypeScript is the ability to gradually adopt the typing system that it offers. So long as you're using the .ts (or .tsx) extension on your files, your JS and TS can co-exist in the same project and things just work.

That said, we're starting off by naming all our files with the .ts extension, so we don't have to worry about interoperability in that regard.

Now we need to define the TypeScript compiler options we expect our project to follow. This can either be done manually, or you can use tsc - the TypeScript compiler - to initialise a set of sensible defaults for you. Imagine which option we will choose?

That's right. The lazy option.

# fwiw, for me:
tsc -v
Version 3.5.3

Depending on how you have TypeScript installed, you may have access to tsc directly, or you may have to go the longer-winded route:

tsc --init

# or

./node_modules/typescript/bin/tsc --init

message TS6071: Successfully created a tsconfig.json file.

Either way, you should end up with a new file in your project root - tsconfig.json - with the following (or very similar) contents:

  "compilerOptions": {
    /* Basic Options */
    // "incremental": true, /* Enable incremental compilation */

Essentially it's largely a bunch of commented out stuff you can play around with to meet your own needs.

Stripped of all the commented out options, we have this as our starting point:

  "compilerOptions": {
    "target": "es5",
    "module": "commonjs",
    "strict": true,
    "esModuleInterop": true

For a human-friendly explanation of this file, consider reading [the docs][1].

There are a couple of additions I'm going to make to this file. Here is the updated config in full:

  "compilerOptions": {
    "target": "es5",
    "module": "commonjs",
    "strict": true,
    "esModuleInterop": true
  "include": ["src/**/*"],
  "exclude": ["node_modules", "__tests__/**/*"]

As a future note, whenever you have made changes to our TypeScript compilation config, make sure to manually stop and restart the server.
